The late monarch was a known lover of the adorable canine breed.
Throughout her 96 years of life, Queen Elizabeth II was an ardent lover of corgis. Now, with yesterday's announcement of her death, the late monarch is survived by three remaining dogs.
Though no arrangements have been publicized yet, royal expert Victoria Arbiter told The Independent that the dogs will likely be rehomed by another royal.
"We can only speculate on plans for the corgis—nothing is left to chance with the royal family," Arbiter said. "The royal family is a family of dog lovers, though none are particularly fond of corgis. The queen was definitely the lord and master and had a wonderful way with them. They were known to nip ankles of the royal family."
The late monarch owned more than 30 corgis in her lifetime. Under her care, they lived lives of luxury and leisure. The Independent reported that they had their own room in Buckingham Palace, dubbed the Corgi Room, where "they slept in elevated wicker baskets—with sheets refreshed daily—and were tended to by the queen herself. Their menu was extensive and included fresh rabbit and beef, served by a gourmet chef."
The dogs were additionally looked after by two footmen, aptly referred to as "Doggie 1" and "Doggie 2."
Vanity Fair previously reported that the queen said she had zero intentions of adopting additional corgis after the death of her beloved pup, Monty, in 2012, explaining that "she didn't want to leave any young dog behind. She wanted to put an end to it."
But when the last of her corgis, a dog named Whisper, died in 2018, the queen was gifted a few more corgis to add to the pack. She received Fergus and Muick when they were puppies while Prince Philip was experiencing health issues in 2021 (Fergus has since passed). Then, on what would have been Philip's 100th birthday, the queen was gifted yet another corgi puppy.
Candy—one of her dorgis, a corgi and dachshund mix—also survived Her Majesty.
